Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), Minister of Works and Housing, announced on Thursday that 7, 315 applications for the National Housing Programme had been received one week after its inception.
This means that the number of applications is 2,315 times greater than the number of available dwelling units.
Fashola revealed this at his appearance before the Senate Committee on Housing.
He was in the Senate to inform lawmakers on the housing initiative, which was launched last Friday in Abuja.
Fashola said, “Out of the over 7,315 applications received from Nigerians as of noon on Thursday, 7,216 were pending, while 99 had been submitted successfully.
“While 24 applications had been submitted from the Federal Capital Territory, no single application had been received from about 20 states.”
According to Fashola, certain standards must be satisfied in order for Nigerians to be eligible for house allotment.
He specified the eligibility requirements as having a recent tax clearance, a payment slip, and a means of identification.
