The Nigerian Senate reversed its earlier decision to make direct primaries the only way for political parties to elect candidates.
Clause 84 of the House of Representatives has been altered to allow for direct, indirect, and consensus nominating of party candidates for party elections.
Senator Yahaya Abubakar, the Senate Leader, asked his colleagues to overturn the Chamber’s decision on clause 84, which was passed last year when the chamber reconvened on Wednesday.
The bill’s direct primary clause had previously stymied its passage, but President Muhammadu Buhari suggested in an interview earlier this year that he was willing to sign it provided legislators made revisions, including adding consensus candidates and indirect primary alternatives to the mode of selecting a candidate for an election.
