The Akwa United Football Club of Uyo recorded a 6-1 victory over Nasarawa United on Thursday. This is the biggest league victory in the history of the club.
The Uyo-based side recorded, back to back, home victories at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium with a big win over the Northerners.
Akwa United defeated Shooting Stars of Ibadan, 3-2, in their last home game before thumping Nasarawa.
Captain Ubong Friday marked his return to full fitness with a 7th minute goal after capitalizing on goalkeeper Danlami Umar’s error. Danlami mishandled Bello Babatunde’s strike from set piece and Friday tapped in the rebound.
Adam Yakubu hits Akwa United second of the afternoon in a 15th minute tapping in Babatunde’s low cross before Wisdom Fernando recorded his brace within seven minutes.
Fernando first received a long pass from goalkeeper Adewale Adeyinka and skipped past the opposing defenders before sending his low drive into the bottom left corner of the post.
The speedster then grabbed his brace when he stylishly volleyed home his team’s fourth goal of the afternoon as they went into a break with a 4-0 commanding lead.
On their return for the second 45 minutes, the away side took the game to Akwa which paid off as former Akwa United man, King Osanga, pulled one back.
Akwa United responded almost immediately through Bello Babatunde who took a trademark strike that flew past Umar into the back of the net.
Within ten minutes from time, substitute striker, Franklin Matib, made matters worse for the visitors with a wonderful drive down the right channel as he spilled a perfect kick past the goalkeeper for Akwa’s sixth of the afternoon.
The Promise Keepers recorded their biggest ever league victory as excitement was felt around the stadium.
Coach Ayodeji Ayeni spoke after the game, thanking his boys for their dedication and victory.
“We are improving everyday, and I’m happy that we have been able to change the mentality of the players and the hard work we put in during training is beginning to reflect in our matches, and the boys are also very confident and determined”.
“Our attention is now on the game against Lobi Stars this weekend. Our target is to give our very best in all our games while hoping for the best as we continue to move forward”.
Akwa United are on a five-game unbeaten run and could extend to six should they win Lobi Stars in Uyo on Sunday.
