The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics has lamented the decline of the country’s polytechnics, claiming that the tertiary educational institution has been stagnant since the establishment of the national strategy on education in 1977.
Polytechnics, according to the union, should be permitted to issue postgraduate degrees up to doctorate level, as is the case in other countries, and the institution has been de-marketed.
The ASUP President, Mr Anderson Ezeibe, said the budget for the country’s education sector was inadequate, noting that the $3.2 billion national budget for education was less than the budgets of some American and German colleges, speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday as part of the activities of a roundtable on the future of Nigeria’s polytechnic system.
The polytechnics, according to Ezeibe, have continued to bear the brunt of the ‘demeaning position of the Higher National Diploma,’ with its curriculum falling short of industry standards.
