Burkina Faso was suspended by the West African group ECOWAS on Friday following a coup, but no more penalties would be imposed for the time being, according to a participant at a virtual conference.
According to the source, ECOWAS is also urging the new junta to release former president Roch Marc Christian Kabore and other officials captured after Monday’s coup.
The bloc will meet again on February 3 in Accra, according to the statement.
The three-hour summit also decided to dispatch a team of ECOWAS chiefs of staff to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso’s capital, on Saturday.
According to the source, ministerial-level envoys from the bloc will arrive on Monday.
