In Anambra State, a tanker containing a chemical suspected to be Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, has exploded.
According to reports, the event occurred early Friday morning near Onitsha’s Upper Iweka intersection, the state’s commercial center.
Major Eze, the National Emergency Management Agency’s (NEMA) southeast Zonal Coordinator, verified the explosion to Channels Television.
He claimed that the tanker hit the road and burst as a result of a fire started by a woman frying Akara on the side of the road.
The tanker hit a dismal road portion of the main Onitsha-Owerri Road, not far from the famed Onitsha Relief Market in the state’s Ogbaru Local Government Area.
Firefighters from Anambra and neighboring Delta State are battling the blaze, which has spread to multiple shops and residential buildings near the accident location.
The event caused traffic congestion in the area, stranding numerous commuters going in and out of Onitsha.
A swarm of witnesses watches as the roaring fire wreaks havoc on properties while others save their belongings from destruction in footage that has gone viral on social media.
