A mysterious fire outbreak has destroyed food items worth million at Yobe State’s famous Potiskum grain market.
The fire started in the early hours of Friday morning, at 3:00 a.m. when firefighters hurried to the scene to put out the fire and were joined by their Nangere counterparts.
Several traders at the market lamented on the losses running into million they have incurred as a result of the fire outbreak according to National Accord newspaper.
Malam Adamu Fiika, a maize seller who owns a grains shop owners said, “…we actually lost lots of property and foodstuff worth hundreds of millions of naira as thousands of bags of maize, millet, beans, rice, groundnut, guinea corn, animal feed and sesame among others have been lost to the inferno”.
Another victim of the inferno, a rice and beans dealer, Alhaji Muhammadu Ngalda, in a phone with reporters, said,” In fact, I really lost lots of our grains and property including the rice we uploaded few days ago from Ngalda and Gadaka market days worth millions of naira”.
“My friends even lost lots of rice items to the inferno including their milling and grinding processing machines worth millions of naira apart from their large stores of grains stock.”
Alhaji Abubuwa, a business proprietor told the Daily Independent, “I woke up with a phone call that fire has razed down our shops, I rushed and came here to see, I lost hundreds of bags of Maize, Beans, Groundnut, animal feed among others”.
Alhaji Danlami, another victim, claimed they had lost similar things in the fire, such as milling and processing machines.
The victims of the fire outbreak pleaded with the authorities to help them with financial and material support which will enable them to return to their various businesses to earn a living.
