United had been drawn against Paris Saint-Germain, setting up a showdown between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but the ceremony had to be replayed when a “technical error” caused United to be left out of the draw and forced to play Atletico Madrid.
United remain underdogs to win the title, but they haven’t lost a game since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure, and interim manager Ralf Rangnick is gradually instilling his ideology on the team.
Liverpool qualified as group winners by finishing ahead of Atalanta, Villarreal, and Young Boys, while Spanish champions Atletico Madrid finished second.
