Nigeria has fully-functional airports including international airports and domestic airports. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria operates all of the airports while the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo, Asaba International Airport, Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport, Kebbi are operated by their respective state governments.
INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS
Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport:
The airport is located in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria, and is named after the first president of the country.
Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport:
This airport located in Kano state was a Royal Air Force station before Nigeria got its independence. It is named after the politician, Aminu Kano and has both domestic and international terminals.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport:
The famous MMIA is located in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos. It was built during World War II and is named after Nigeria’s fourth military ruler, Murtala Muhammed.
Akanu Ibiam International Airport:
This is also known as Enugu airport and it serves Enugu state and nearby cities like Abakiliki, Okigwe, Otukpo, Orlu. It was named after the late Akanu Ibiam who was a medical doctor and a statesman.
Port Harcourt International Airport:
This airport is located in Omagwa, a town in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State. It has both domestic and international terminals.
DOMESTIC AIRPORTS
- Ilorin International Airport: This airport is located at Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state and is operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
- Kaduna International Airport: Located in Kaduna, the capital of Kaduna state, the airport was inaugurated in 1982. However, the Old Kaduna Airport was in operation before transferring its public uses and airport codes to the Kaduna International Airport.
- Anambra Cargo Airport: This newly commissioned airport is located in Anambra state and has recorded over 147 flights since its inauguaration on the 7th of December 2021.
- Sadiq Abubakar III International Airport: This airport is located in Sokoto, the capital of Sokoto state.
- Sir Abubakar Tafewa Balewa Airport (Bauchi State Airport): This airport is located in Bauchi, the capital of Bauchi state and is named after the first Prime Minister of Nigeria.
- Benin Airport: This airport is located in Benin, the capital of Edo state.
- Margaret Ekpo International Airport (Calabar Airport): This airport was commissioned in 1983 and was named after Margaret Ekpo, one of Nigeria’s leading feminists and anticolonial activists. It is located in Calabar, the capital of Cross River state.
- Ibadan Airport: This airport which was inaugurated in 1982 is located in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state.
- Yakubu Gowon Airport: The airport which was named after Yakubu Gowon, the former Nigerian head of state is located in Jos, the capital of Plateau state.
- Maiduguri International Airport: This airport is in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.
- Victor Attah International Airport: This is an airport in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom state. It was inaugurated in 2009 and is named after the former governor of the state.
- Yola Airport: This airport is located in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state.
- Akure Airport: This airport is located in Akure, the capital of Ondo state.
- Sani Abacha International Airport: This airport is located in Gombe, the capital of Gombe state but the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria closed it down in 2019 due to its debts.
- Sir Ahmadu Bello International Airport: This airport in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi started operations in 2014 and is named after the Nigerian statesman.
- Dutse International Airport: The airport was inaugurated in 2014 by former president Goodluck Jonathan and is located at Dutse, the capital of Jigawa state.
- Jalingo Airport: This airport is located in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba state.
- Katsina Airport: This airport is located in Katsina, the capital of Katsina state.
- Makurdi Airport: This airport is located in Makurdi, the capital of Benue state. It current does not facilitate commercial flights.
- Minna Airport: This airport is located in Minna, the capital of Niger state.
- Bayelsa International Airport: This airport located in Yenogoa, Bayelsa state was officially commissioned for operation in February 2020 and in April 2021 was granted approval for commercial flight operations by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
- Warri Airport: This is an aviation facility in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta state.
- Zaria Airport: This airport is located in Zaria, a city in Kaduna state, however, there are no scheduled airline operations at the airport.
