Every year, there are many national and international public holidays observed in Nigeria and all over the world.
Below are the annual national public holidays to be observed in 2022.
These dates may be modified as official changes are announced.
- New Year’s Day – Saturday, 1st January, 2022 – New Year’s Day is a national public holiday observed every year. However, the federal government moved it to Monday, 3rd January 2022 as it originally fell on the weekend.
2. Good Friday – Friday, 15th April, 2022 – A Christian holiday observed in honour of the Easter celebration.
3. Easter Monday – Monday, 18th April, 2022 – The celebration which lasts throughout the weekend is also given a national public holiday on the following Monday.
4. Workers’ Day – Sunday, 1st May, 2022 – Also known as Labour Day is an international celebration of the working class and is promoted by the international labour movement.
5. Eid el Fitri – Tuesday, 3rd May, 2022 – This is a Muslim celebration that commemorates the Ramadan which is a Muslim fast.
6. Eid el Fitr Holiday – Wednesday, 4th May, 2022 – This is the national holiday that accompanies the Eid el Fitri.
7. Children’s Day – Friday, 27th May, 2022 – This is a day set aside to celebrate children all over the world but the date varies from country to country. Mostly schools observe this holiday.
8. Democracy Day – Sunday, 12th June, 2022 – This national holiday marks the day the military handed over power to civilian rule in Nigeria in 1999.
9. Id el Kabir – July, 10th July, 2022 – This holiday commemorates the Muslim celebration of the Feast of Sacrifice. It is considered the most important feast of the Muslim calendar.
10. Id el Kabir holiday – Monday, 11th July, 2022 – This is the national holiday that accompanies the Id el Kabir.
11. Independence Day – Saturday, 1st October, 2022 – This national holiday marks the proclamation of Nigeria’s independence from British rule in 1960.
12. Id el Maulud – Saturday, 8th October, 2022 – This day is set aside to celebrate the birthday of Prophet Mohammed.
13. Christmas Day – Sunday, 25th December, 2022 – This day is set aside internationally to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ by Christians.
14. Boxing Day – Monday, 26th December, 2022 – This is a holiday celebrated after Christmas day where people exchange gifts with their loved ones and friends.
