These Nigerian Reality Shows have been a means to ease the daily stress that we encounter in Nigeria. With the evolution of the media over the years, the introduction of Reality TV shows has been a beautiful addition to the television experience. These shows have encapsulated many viewers nationwide with thrilling moments to look forward to in every episode.
Every home in Nigeria has its favourite shows and is always glued to the TV when this show begin to air. Examples of these Nigerian Reality shows include; Big brother Naija, project fame, The voice etc. They have garnered more viewers and followers over the years because of how captivating every session is.
In this article, we will be listing a few of these reality TV shows;
1. BIG BROTHER NAIJA:
This television show which began to air in 2006, is currently the most anticipated and talked about show in Nigeria. It is a reality show in which housemates are confined in an isolated house over a period of time.
The housemates are expected to live out their best selves whilst engaging in different tasks, Friday night jacuzzi parties and Saturday night parties during the duration of their stay which is determined by the fans and viewers who vote for their favourite housemates. The housemates with the least vote are evicted until a winner emerges.
The show currently has Seven seasons and has begun auditioning for the next season.
2. NIGERIAN IDOL:
This is the local version of the Idol series franchise. The franchise allows for talented and gifted singers, rappers, dancers e.t.c. to showcase their talent on live TV for a grand prize.
The first season of this show was aired in October 2010 and has 7 seasons with its latest in 2022. The Nigerian Idol produced the likes of Mercy Chinwo, Progress etc.
The show is highly competitive as Idols are expected to come with their A-game or risk being eliminated early in the show.
3. PROJECT FAME WEST AFRICA:
This is a music talent reality TV show that airs in West Africa but it is filmed in Lagos, Nigeria. The show which is run by Ultima Production began in 2008 and has 9 series up until 2017 when it last aired.
The highly competitive musical reality TV show features music coaching sessions, weekly recaps and Saturday eviction night. Project fame is one of the most highly contested music TV shows that produced the likes of Chidinma, Praiz, Niniola, Iyanya, and Johnny Drille.
4. GULDER ULTIMATE SEARCH:
This is a reality TV series created and produced by Nigerian Breweries PLC to promote Gulder Lager beer.
The television series first aired in 2004 and it has recorded 12 series so far. After a break which lasted 7 years, the show returned in 2021.
This Nigerian Reality Show features 10-30 persons contesting amongst themselves through tough hurdles for the Star prize. The show encapsulates jungle experiences, tourist adventures and daring challenges that task the human mind and has a way of keeping you glued to your TV.
5. THE VOICE NIGERIA:
Yet another Nigerian Reality Show that showcases the strongest undiscovered vocalist as they compete for the grand prize with access to recording deals, music coaching and exposure.
The show began to air in 2017 and has recorded 3 seasons so far. The show is set to begin its fourth session with contestants drawn from sub-auditions across 3 major cities in Nigeria.
6. WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE:
This is a TV game show aired on the Nigerian Television Authority and sponsored by MTN Nigeria.
This show stands out amongst other Nigerian Reality Shows for its content which are educational. The show is a replica of the original British format of ‘Who wants to be a millionaire.’ It was first aired in 2004 but temporarily stopped in 2017 and has resumed back again this year, 2022.
The show gives contestants the opportunity to win cash up to 20 million Naira with options like 50-50, Phone a friend, and ask the audience to help them get there. The contestants also have guaranteed levels at questions 5,10 & 15 so they don’t lose out entirely.
