Dr. Osahon Enabulele, President of the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA), has been elected President-elect of the World Medical Association (WMA).
After nearly a week of voting by participating medical associations from around the world, he has emerged victorious.
According to a press release from the association, Enabulele’s victory demonstrates his global acceptance and recognition of his many years of hard work within the WMA, his profound intellect, sagacity, and excellent performance in all responsibilities assigned to him, and his undeniable progressive contributions to the global body.
Dr. Enabulele, a previous President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), is the association’s President-elect, succeeding Dr. Heidi Stensmyren of Sweden.
Dr. Stensmyren succeeds Dr. David Barbe of the United States as WMA President, according to the WMA structure for the 2021 – 2022 executive year.
After more than 14 years of worldwide participation, Dr. Enabulele, a Chief Consultant Family Physician, has risen to the position of President-elect.
He was the first Nigerian physician to be elected President of the CMA since the organization’s inception in November 1962. In the same year, Dr. Enabulele became the first Nigerian physician to be elected to the WMA’s statutory Council and the first Nigerian physician to chair one of the association’s only three standing committees, the Socio-Medical Affairs Committee (SMAC).
Following his election as Chairman of SMAC in Chile in 2019, he was re-elected as Chair of SMAC in 2021 for a second term.
On Friday, October 15, 2021, he is slated to deliver his acceptance speech at the World Medical Association’s General Assembly in London.
He is the first Nigerian and West African physician to be elected President of the World Medical Association (WMA) since it was founded in 1947.
