Super Falcons Star, Asisat Oshoala, has been stripped of the Super Falcons captaincy, Sports news Africa confirmed.
The Barcelona forward took over from Desire Operanozie back in 2019, following a fallout with the hierarchy of the Nigeria Football Federation.
Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, drafted a 25-player list for the upcoming buildup game of Africa Women Cup of Nations against Canada later this month.
The change in captaincy came after an advice from the Nigeria Football Federation.
“We have no issue whatsoever with Asisat Oshoala but thoughts of stripping her of the armband came after the Aisha Buhari Cup last September”, said a high-ranking official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
“This is not for anything negative but for troubling concerns of seeing her struggle in national team colours. We and the coach, Waldrum, observed the captaincy was weighing her down and affected her play. With or without it, we believe she is a true professional player and should not struggle to prove otherwise by delivering on the pitch.”
The 28-year old Oshoala has been absent from Nigeria since she last featured for the Nation in February, and is likely to miss the Women AWFCON.
