The Birth of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG)
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was established in 1952 by Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, initially known as the Glory of God Fellowship. In 1973, a pivotal moment in the church’s history occurred when Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who was a lecturer at the University of Lagos at the time, attended RCCG in Ebute Metta.
Pastor Adeboye became deeply involved in the church, initially serving as an interpreter, translating Rev. Akindayomi’s sermons from Yoruba to English. His dedication and spiritual insight led to his ordination as a pastor in 1975. Following the passing of Rev. Akindayomi, Pastor Adeboye was appointed General Superintendent, a position that was later changed to Overseer, marking the beginning of his leadership at RCCG.
Under Pastor Adeboye’s leadership, RCCG has experienced unprecedented growth, expanding both locally and internationally. Today, it is one of the largest and most influential Christian denominations in the world.
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has continued to grow rapidly, guided by its vision: “To have a member of RCCG in every family of all nations.” Over the years, this vision has propelled the church to expand and develop numerous impactful programs. These include the monthly Holy Ghost Service, held on the first Friday of every month, the Divine Encounter, and Shiloh Hour on the first Monday, as well as the flagship Annual Convention, which takes place every August.
A major highlight in RCCG’s calendar is the Annual Holy Ghost Congress (HGC), held every December. Originally known as the “Holy Ghost Festival,” the Congress started as a one-night event in 1998. However, the event’s significance and scale grew, and in 2001, the name was officially changed during the August Convention by Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, marking a milestone in the program’s evolution.

The idea for this transformative event began in 1998 when Pastor Adeboye, returning from a trip to the USA, passed by Lekki Beach in Lagos. As he drove along the beach with some of his spiritual children, he reflected on how Jesus would gather large crowds by the seaside to teach the Word of life, accompanied by healing, signs, and wonders.
This vision inspired the inception of the Holy Ghost Festival, which later became the renowned Holy Ghost Congress, a gathering of believers from all over the world. In that pivotal moment, the Holy Spirit imparted a colossal vision into Pastor Adeboye’s heart—one that would forever change the course of RCCG’s journey.
He envisioned hosting four million souls in a single gathering, united in worship of the King of Kings, Jesus Christ. The purpose was not just worship, but to experience a mighty move of God that would bring healing, signs, wonders, and an unprecedented dimension of salvation for countless souls.
By the grace of God, Pastor Adeboye led the Redeemed Christian Church of God to fulfill this vision later that year. On December 18, 1998, the church hosted what international observers hailed as the largest gathering of people in history at that time. The event, named Divine Visitation, took place under the open skies at Lekki Beach in Lagos, Nigeria.
To the amazement of all, the crowd exceeded the initial estimate of four million attendees. The church’s aerial view counted approximately 6.5 million people, while CNN reported the crowd to be around 7.2 million. The event was a monumental success, with 1,500 choristers and 80,000 ushers, marking a historic moment in the history of RCCG and the body of Christ worldwide.

This unprecedented gathering not only attracted global media attention but also became a defining moment for the church, signifying the power of faith, unity, and the mighty hand of God at work. Ministers from the RCCG, along with guest ministers from other ministries, gathered at the Divine Visitation event.
Pastor Enoch Adeboye delivered a powerful sermon on the topic “Divine Presence,” while other esteemed ministers, including Bishop Mike Okonkwo (then Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria), Reverend Moses Aransiola, and Bishop David Oyedepo, led fervent prayers. It was an unforgettable night filled with deliverance, testimonies, soul-winning, prayer, praise, and the preaching of God’s Word.
What began as a one-night event in Lekki in 1998 quickly grew into a three-day program, and eventually expanded into a week-long celebration. The swelling crowds that gathered for the Holy Ghost Congress at Redemption Camp necessitated the construction of larger venues.
The services were relocated to the expansive Arena, and eventually, to a more spacious 3km by 3km Arena at the Shimawa section of the Redemption Camp. Over the years, the Holy Ghost Congress has undergone remarkable growth and transformation, as the power of God continues to move freely, healing, empowering, anointing, and drawing souls to Him.
This year’s Holy Ghost Service, set to take place at The Redemption City of God, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, promises to be another awe-inspiring event, filled with miracles, signs, and wonders. The atmosphere will be one of divine encounter, where lives will be forever changed.
