Nigeria is a country blessed with an abundance of sporting facilities with several stadiums built as the Nation continues to build a better sports world.
Many stadiums have been built to meet the existence of many, but which stadium was actually the first to be built in the country?
THE ONIKAN STADIUM BUILT IN 1930
The Onikan Stadium is now known as the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. It is a multi-purpose stadium in Lagos.
It was in the 2019 during a ‘Day of honour’ event that the Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a bid to celebrate the exit of the first Military Governor of Lagos State, Brigadier-General Mobolaji Johnson renamed the stadium after the fallen hero.
It is currently used for football matches it serves as the home ground of various Lagos teams including notably Ikorodu United F.C., Stationery Stores F.C., First Bank and Julius Berger FC.
Onikan Stadium has a capacity of 5,000 people and is also used for social and political events.
The original stadium was built in 1930 on Lagos Island near Tafewa Balewa Square. And six years later it was named after King George V.
But then again, between 1963 and 1973, it was rechristened as the Lagos City Stadium.
