The Nigeria Basketball Federation Caretaker Committee, led by Musa Kida, has been instructed to dissolve immediately by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, ahead of the federation’s elections.
The sports ministry praised Kida and Prof. Florence Adeyanju for their contributions to the growth of basketball in Nigeria in a letter delivered to them from a member of the NBBF’s Caretaker Committee.
Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi, the NBBF Secretary-General, said in a statement:
“As you may recall that the Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, on May 4, 2021, inaugurated the Caretaker Committees for 31 National Sports Federations, including Basketball, to run the affairs of the respective Federations ahead of elections of their new Boards.
“As the Nigeria Basketball Federation prepares for its Elective Congress, I am directed to inform you that the Federation’s Caretaker Committee has been dissolved with immediate effect.
“The Federation appreciates your contribution to the development of Basketball in Nigeria.” the letter added.
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the committee’s dissolution comes just 24 hours after its Permanent Secretary, Ismaila Abubakar, issued a press release ordering the indefinite postponement of the NBBF Elective Congress, which had been planned for Saturday in Benin.
Kida, on the other hand, urged stakeholders to disregard “an unsigned press statement credited to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development indefinitely postponing the NBBF elections.”
Kida stated that the NBBF Elective Congress would take place on Saturday as planned in Benin.
