Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has written his name in gold following his exploit for German side Union Berlin in the Bundesliga since his arrival last term.
Awoniyi first signed on loan last season before making the loan permanent and has become the Club’s record-leading scorer in the German top flight for Union Berlin.
Gaining promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history three years ago, German star Max Kruse was the record scorer with 12 goals to his name in the country’s first division.
But Awoniyi dethroned the German on Sunday when he helped his side win the bragging right in the Berlin derby after beating Hertha Berlin 2-0.
“It’s a good feeling to know that we won the first Berlin derby of the season,” the former Liverpool signing told the Bundesliga.com.
“I think for Union, everyone is important.” Awoniyi said after the match.
The Super Eagles forward has scored 13 league goals since joining the club last year including his 8 in 12 games this campaign.
The 24-year old scored 5 league goals last season while on loan from Liverpool taking his tally to 13 Bundesliga goals and counting.
With the injury to countryman Victor Osimhen which is set to rule him out of the Africa Nations cup next year, Awoniyi may be handed an important role in the Super Eagles squad considering his prolific goalscoring form when the Nations Cup begins.
