During Exercise Golden Dawn, troops from the 82nd Nigerian Army (NA) and other security agencies detained Godwin Nnamdi, a notorious commander of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Army spokesman Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the suspect’s detention.
On Saturday, he said, the IPOB leader was apprehended during joint clearance operations at a camp suspected of being the bastion of IPOB/ESN elements in Nkanu LGA’s Akpowfu Forest.
During the clearance operation, forces engaged the dissidents in a battle, forcing them to flee, and arresting their leader as a result.
General Nwachukwu stated that troops recovered a variety of items, including an AK 47 rifle, a magazine containing 21 7.62 mm special rounds, and a cellphone.
Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), praised the troops for their achievements thus far, he said.
According to an army official, General Yahaya has ordered the troops to search and eliminate all suspected criminal hideouts in their area of responsibility.
